Gather at Shoreditch Design Week: Messy Heart and The Tactile World
Gather took part in this year's Shoreditch Design Week as part of You Can Sit With Us, the fourth edition of 2LG Studio's exhibition series spotlighting emerging designers, curated by Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead.
Founder Phoebe Stubbs presented Messy Heart, showing new pieces made by melting down Gather's glass waste - broken or unusable pieces, still recognisable in colour and form - into a series of tabletops.
The process meant working against instinct. Glassblowing depends on physical control, built up over years of practice. This work asked the opposite: understanding how glass melts and deforms when that control is deliberately let go, through sustained experiments with heat and melt time. Twenty years into glassmaking, it's the kind of project that still feels genuinely new.
Alongside the exhibition, Phoebe joined a panel discussion on craft, The Tactile World, as part of the same programme.
