Sustainability at Gather
Glassmaking uses a lot of energy, so we focus on practical ways to reduce fuel use and waste.
Our main furnace is electric and runs on renewable energy, and we created a reheating furnace to fuel two workstations at once, saving gas.
Waste
Glassmaking produces offcuts and leftovers, but we try not to throw them away. Where possible we remelt and reuse them for decorative effects.
This year, we're trialling new electric furnaces to remelt our waste, to tint it for use as handles and applied details, closing the loop on materials.
Packaging
We use recycled, biodegradable, and recyclable packing materials wherever possible, and always aim for the safest, least harmful ways to move fragile glass.
The Future
Sustainability at Gather is about more than energy and materials - it’s about keeping a working glass studio in the UK.
We train skilled glassmakers who care about the craft and the planet, while continuously finding ways to use less energy, reuse more material, and invest in equipment that lowers emissions.
