Behind the bench with HTSI

We were delighted to welcome Alice Lascelles into the hotshop for HTSI, the FT’s weekend magazine. Her feature appears online and in print, in the HTSI autumn design special.

Earlier this autumn, Alice came to our Woolwich studio to blow her own drinking glass. She chose a blue-green with pale, smoky flecks, worked alongside Phoebe and the team at the bench, and took home a glass she made herself.

The drinking glass class is one of our most popular, and it sits close to where Gather began. Opening the hotshop to the public has always been part of how we work.

Gathering glass from the furnace, colouring it and blowing it into a mould is a team effort, and sharing that process with people who have never held a blowpipe is one of the best parts of what we do.

Seeing that experience reach a wider audience was a joy, and seeing it on the page of the autumn design special was a proud moment. Alice’s piece captures the heat, the pace and the focus of the hotshop.

Make your own drinking glasses. Our drinking glass class is an hour in the hotshop, guided by our glassmakers. You choose your colours, gather molten glass from the furnace and blow it into a mould to make a glass of your own.
